2025 Jonathan Yule exhibition at Burnham Overy Staithe Boathouse.

The coastal landscape of North Norfolk has been part of my life for over fifty years. Having trained in agriculture I came to Norfolk to work as a shepherd. The wild coastal marshes fuelled my early paintings. As I worked with sheep on coastal land and spent as much time as I could wildfowling and field sketching, the dramatic skies and the wildfowl and waders became a constant source of inspiration. In 1979 I sought advice from my artistic hero, Sir Peter Scott, by writing to him and asking if he might give me guidance. That meeting changed my life. His kindness and encouragement gave me the confidence to pursue my artistic ambition. Alongside my professional painting I continued contract shepherding for some years, lambing a thousand ewes in the military training area close to our home in the Breckland for two decades.

The Pinkfeet geese that migrate to Norfolk from Iceland have always held a fascination for me. For 30 years I have been travelling to Iceland, following in the footsteps of Sir Peter Scott, to see them on their breeding grounds. I have just returned from this year’s trip and the passion has not dimmed.

The wild marshes of the coast, grazed by both cattle and sheep, have been a huge part of my life. The oil painting of Belted Galloway cattle (owned by Holkham Estate) and the dramatic late afternoon sky encapsulate two powerful inspirations in one image.  Belted Galloways, surely one of the hardiest of breeds, are perfect for the conservation grazing required to maintain the rich diversity of habitat nurtured by the Estate. The result of this conservation work is the wonderful network of wetland grazing, lagoons and dunes that make North Norfolk such a haven for breeding and wintering wildfowl.

BURNHAM OVERY BOATHOUSE,
Burnham Overy Staithe
NORFOLK
24th - 29th September 2024.

‘When Worlds Collide’ brings together distinct visions of the Norfolk coastline, bearing witness to the creative talents of artists using different mediums and spanning across nearly a century of work.

91 year old Essex lad Colin Kent, who started painting as a ten year old boy, now using predominantly watercolour and collage, creating semi abstract haunting landscape vistas, has a background in architecture. Former president of the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters. He declares every painting ‘an experiment’.

New kid on the block is former paparazzo photographer David Koppel, now turning his lens on the vast skies and dramatic land of East Anglia, after falling in love with the land following the illustration of Miles Hedley’s seminal work on the Norfolk Broads, ‘Still Waters’, back in 1999.

For Further information please contact David Koppel on 07831 838378

Colin Kent (1934-    )
In his early years Colin Kent studied and worked as an architect. He was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1971 and then became a full time painter. His landscapes and interiors are painted from his memories, feelings, and impressions, displaying the romantic elements and the spirit of places filtered through his own vision and artistic sensibilities. Colin experiments continuously using a variety of water based media and collage.
He has exhibited at the Mall Galleries London, receiving the Linda Blackstone Award at the RI exhibition, and also the Buzzacott Award amongst others. Colin has also exhibited at the Royal Academy London, The Royal West of England Academy, the Guildhall and many of the best fine art galleries. His works are in collections in the UK, U.S.A, France, Germany, Finland, and Japan.

David Koppel (1961-     )
David Koppel served his photographic apprenticeship in the rough-and-tumble world of the Fleet Street paparazzi in 1980’s London when his skills captured the very essence of the Me Decade that gave birth to the celebrity culture of today. Building on the reputation gained through the photographs for the book Still Waters, his black-and-white portraits of ordinary people now rank among the many famous names in his portfolio. Koppel also went one better and in 2002 bought the St Giles St Gallery, bringing the best of local and international contemporary art and photography to Norwich. Moving to Norfolk, he began photographing the landscape, captivated by the flat land, the vast skies and the ever changing moods.
His work has been exhbitied both in London and Norfolk and is in several well known collections.

THE ISLAND EXHIBITION 20-22nd August

Kate and Flic Lowe are a mother and daughter who both draw inspiration from the marsh, beaches and big skies of this area. Flic a potter working with stoneware and porcelain and Kate who paints on canvas and board with acrylic and oil paints.

THE ISLAND - POP UP SHOP 21st and 22nd August

Kate and Flic will also be hosting a pop up shop over the 21st and 22nd August with beautiful hand made jewellery by Madeleine Spencer and gorgeous Indian block print clothes and accessories by Fleur Swann.

FLIC LOWE

Flic started to make pots as a law student and continued to take classes with the internationally renowned potter Joanna Constantinidis while she was working and bringing up her children. Later after several years as a CAB employment lawyer she went back to college to study for her City and Guilds Diploma in Ceramics

In 2008 Flic moved to Norfolk but it was only in 2013 that she really returned to making pots.

Flic works in both porcelain and stoneware using an electric kiln. She is fascinated by how the internal form dictates the external and the way the clay reacts on the wheel and to the hand.  A pot may not be in perfect symmetry, but according to the Japanese idea of wabi-sabi, it may still be beautiful.

The Norfolk sky, the sea, the marsh all inform the decoration of her pots which are often glazed inside with her own glazes and then coloured on the outside with a variety of oxides.

KATE LOWE

Kate Lowe is an abstract landscape painter who trained at Wimbledon School of Art and Bristol UWE in the late 1990s. She has led a very peripatetic life being married to an army officer but she remains fixated by the marsh and its ever changing landscapes. These influences draw her home to Burnham Norton to paint. She likes to get up early to experience the sun rises or to go out late to catch the sunsets of the intense skies she loves to portray.

She works intuitively with bright warm colours in acrylics and oils, trying to capture that special relationship between the big skies and flat marshes of the coast in north Norfolk and is particularly interested in Scolt Head Island and the walk towards it on the Cockle Path. Kate tends to make en plain air sketches to capture the fleeting moods and colours of the marsh; the feeling of a bright blue day, a threatening sky or a resplendent sunrise and the rise and fall of the tide. These sketches are then worked up into bigger abstract works in her studio.

Her energetic love of colour is infectious and she builds up her pictures intuitively moving through many layers of paint to achieve her rich and exciting work. Barbara Rae is a big influence.

Kate has shown in galleries in the UK and Europe and has clients worldwide.

For years I’ve been observing the North Norfolk coast, bringing everything I know to create paintings to cherish and enjoy. It’s the place I spend a lot of my time walking with my sketchbook observing and drawing. It is a place where I feel a connection, a sense of presence. I then reflect on the studies once back at my studio surrounded by views of undulating countryside.

Painting to capture the beauty of Creation along the North Norfolk coast, with its creeks, skies and expansive beaches, has become, for me, an exciting spiritual journey on canvas. I find that painting in a semi-abstract style using mixed media and acrylics will enable my paintings to reveal a deeper mystery.

The horizon is my focal point and my sketchbooks give insight into how I work as an artist; rapidly drawing my feelings of a place through mark making is key to recalling all the energy I sense when sketching the fleeting and ethereal light. Often on these coastal walks, my passion for the work grows, not only in an emotional response but also a spiritual one, sensing the joy of my Creator.  Capturing the seasonal elements along the coast always delights me; the fiery hues of a blazing sunset, the misty sea frets together with the clarity of light on a bright breezy day. They all seem to come alive, conveying an intense visual experience which speaks to my heart expressing the colour and thanksgiving that I feel as an artist.

The stunning coastal landscape of Norfolk and its wildlife have always been central to my work and are the core of it. Long wavering skeins of pinkfeet geese etched against a winter sky, wigeon pitching into a flooding salt marsh or cattle far out on the grazing marsh all feature strongly in my work. Habitat is a key part of my depictions of these wetland landscapes. It is of vital importance to the abundant wildlife of our Norfolk marshlands and coast. I try to evoke awareness of what we have, are in danger of losing and, in some cases, are recreating in our fragile world. Although drawing and painting were always a constant in my life, I trained in agriculture and worked as a shepherd for many years. Long and happy hours spent tending my flock in the Breckland near our home and in North Norfolk gave me the opportunity to watch and learn at close hand the landscapes and wildlife I feel so strongly connected to. I am self taught and began my professional artistic career over 40 years ago following a happy and encouraging meeting with Sir Peter Scott. His great kindness and optimism gave me the confidence to follow this path and I will forever be indebted to him. My work has taken me to Northern Canada, Swedish Lapland, Kenya and, for the last 32 years, Iceland. My fascination with pinkfeet geese has made our annual trip to this extraordinary and austerely beautiful country a hugely important part of my life.

May 25th to June 2nd 2024.
Burnham Overy Boathouse
Burnham Overy Staithe
Norfolk.
PE31 8FF

This is an installation of 600 small individual 'units’ that are laid out randomly on three shelves in a studio 'shed' that is set inside the Quay Room of the Boathouse in Burnham Overy Staithe, Norfolk.

Each unit is unique, of varying colour and tone, and represents some visual aspect of the estuary where I live. Some of the pieces are also photographs. The viewer is encouraged to explore what happens when you arrange these units together on one of several square boards I have provided on a workbench below the shelves; 2, perhaps 3 or more pieces at the same time.

For the last few years I have been covering four different practices of photography, painting, drawing and relief work and am now interested in how they work together.  I made a series called Vision of an Estuary (see on my website) where I pair and juxtapose 2 different types of work opposite each other on a page. The two individual pictures start a dialogue together… one informs the other. A wordless evocation of the experience of being in English Landscape.

In this exhibition you are encouraged to play your own game as you look at  the relationships between different small manifestations of work and find ways that the arrangements you create explore your own personal experiences of being in landscape.

Huge thanks to Crane Garden Buildings who are constructing the exhibition space... a building within a building.

Other framed work will be on show at the exhibition.

I look forward to seeing you... and thank you

Life lines exhibition brings together Paul Zuckerman and Gilbert-Scott contemporaries Bel, Lou, Nick and Fee Sweeney. It is an intimate and personal response to the landscape, the history of our life here. The work makes tribute to friendship and family, paying respects to both the land and community.

The show comprises of paintings and of installations - which connect directly to the union of family - and pots made from clay dug from the marsh, all the work is grounded in a sense of place and connectedness.

The curatorial process reflects the values of the boat house, the DIY aesthetics and the inventiveness we have employed to show our work - we hope - complements the creativity and ingenuity of the boat builders, Max and John.

As a family we have been sailing up here for decades.  My other abiding interest is drawing musicians performing, observing how they communicate with each other and their audience through the music.

The experience of drawing and painting in the Foyer of the Barbican in 1989 was a novelty for me at the time. Different string quartets one after the other played all the Haydn quartets.  By the end of that weekend I was hooked!

Since 2006 I have been Artist in Residence with Leamington Music.  I have a solo exhibition most years at their May Festival in the Royal Pump Rooms in Leamington Spa.

DR TONY HUGHES - Artist
Tony Hughes is a long established Harley Street doctor with wide interests. Artist, singer, performer, sometime poet he divides his time between and the Norflolk coast.

As a painter in oil he refers to the majority of the body of his work as “ abstracted landscapes” -implying taking aspects of a subject to emphasis it - being composition based on geometry and the celebration of colour.

He has exhibited (and performed) at the London Sketch Club and is a member of the Chelsea Arts Club. The Norfolk coast has been a passion and endless source of inspiration for the past 50 years.

Tony’s dynamic abstract body of work with it’s rich palette reflects the textures and hues that instantly evoke a connection to the surrounding nature in Norfolk. He has undertaken a number of private commissions and now is now introducing his work to a wider public.
